Based on 2026 data from the CDC and American Diabetes Association (ADA), diabetes is a major public health crisis in the United States, affecting roughly 12% of the population. Over 40 million Americans are living with diabetes, with 1.5 million new cases diagnosed annually, while an additional 115 million adults have pre-diabetes

Major Medical Complications of Diabetes:

  • Cardiovascular Disease: Individuals with diabetes are up to three times more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke due to damaged blood vessels.
  • Kidney Damage (Nephropathy): High blood sugar strains the kidneys’ filtering system, making diabetes the leading cause of kidney failure.
  • Eye Disease & Vision Loss: Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts can cause blindness.
  • Nerve Damage (Neuropathy): High blood sugar damages nerves, causing pain, numbness, and tingling, most commonly in the legs and feet.
  • Foot Complications/Amputation: Poor circulation and nerve damage make it difficult for feet to heal, leading to infections and sometimes requiring amputation.
  • Dental Disease: High sugar levels in saliva foster bacteria, resulting in gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Brain Health: Diabetes can lead to cognitive issues, memory loss, and a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Insulin is a hormone your pancreas makes that is essential for regulating blood sugar levels. It helps move glucose from your blood into your cells so your body can use it for energy. Insulin resistance is a primary, driving cause of type 2 diabetes, where cells in muscles, fat, and liver stop responding effectively to insulin, causing blood sugar to rise.

Diabetes raises the risk of developing other health conditions, including Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), which restricts blood flow to the limbs. PAD is a common circulatory condition in which plaque buildup narrows the arteries, reducing blood flow, usually in the legs. This can lead to lower extremity infections and the formation of non-healing ulcers in people with diabetes. Research published in the 2926 journal “Science Translational Medicine” discovered Type 2 diabetes can turn immune cells that normally help with tissue repair and anti-inflammatory responses into triggers of chronic inflammation.

Chronically high glucose also triggers inflammation that damages nerve fibers and the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) that supply them known as diabetic neuropathy. This affects up to 50% of diabetics, typically starting in the feet and hands. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, burning, or sharp pain, which often worsen at night.

Myo-Inositol and Blood Sugar Management

Myo-inositol, first isolated in 1850, is widely recognized for improving insulin sensitivity and managing metabolic issues like diabetes.

Myo-inositol (MI) improves blood sugar management in both men and women by increasing insulin sensitivity, allowing cells to utilize glucose more efficiently. It was originally referred to as a B vitamin, however now it is known to be a sugar with a chemical structure similar to glucose.

It works as a secondary messenger in insulin signaling, often reducing fasting glucose, insulin levels, and HOMA-IR (insulin resistance index). It is especially effective for PCOS, metabolic syndrome, and gestational diabetes. Each kidney makes around 2 g of myo-inositol per day,

Clinical studies show that taking 2g of myo-inositol as a supplement twice daily can lower fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in patients with PCOS and type 2 diabetes. Myo Inositol has also been shown to help manage related symptoms, including reducing triglycerides, blood pressure, and managing weight.
